On a summer evening in Jonesboro, Georgia, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter, ending the life of 28-year-old Terrell Douglas. The events of June 4, 2023, unfolded at an apartment complex on Southlake Cove Court, where Douglas was visiting his girlfriend. An argument erupted when Jovaa Jackson, a 31-year-old former Rockdale County sheriff's deputy with whom Douglas was also in a romantic relationship and who was pregnant with his child, arrived at the location.
The verbal altercation between Douglas and Jackson took a deadly turn when Jackson produced a handgun and shot Douglas in the chest. Witnesses reported hearing the argument escalate before the sound of a gunshot. According to reports, Douglas's girlfriend, who was inside the apartment, closed the door upon seeing Jackson with the weapon. When she re-emerged, she found Douglas on the ground with a gunshot wound. In a surprising turn, Jackson was reportedly seen applying pressure to the wound and called 911 before fleeing the scene.
Emergency services transported Douglas to Southern Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. Two days after the shooting, Jovaa Jackson surrendered to the authorities, also turning over the firearm she allegedly used. Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, Jovaa Jackson was charged with malice murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and stalking. Her case is now pending in the Georgia Superior Court. It was also revealed that just days before the incident, on May 31, 2023, Jackson had resigned from her position as a deputy with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office while under investigation for employee misconduct.
