In the late hours of April 30, 2022, Sonia Yadeli Villegas Cervantes, a 37-year-old Hispanic female, was visiting with friends at the Clayton Village Mobile Home Park in Jonesboro, Georgia. Having fled violence in her native Mexico less than two years prior, she was seeking a safer life. As she was leaving her friends' home just before 1 a.m., she was confronted by two individuals who intended to rob her of her cellphone and cash.
The encounter quickly turned violent. According to her sister, the assailants struck Villegas Cervantes, causing her to fall to the ground before they shot her. The suspects then fled the scene. When law enforcement arrived, they found Villegas Cervantes, a mother and grandmother, mortally wounded. She left behind a daughter and four grandchildren.
In the days that followed, Clayton County police investigated the senseless act of violence. Their efforts led to the arrest of two suspects, a man and a juvenile male. Both individuals were charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery in connection with the death of Sonia Yadeli Villegas Cervantes. At the time of their arrest, authorities did not release the names of the suspects, citing the ongoing investigation and the possibility of their involvement in other crimes.
