Bobby Lyons, a 17-year-old Black male, was caught in violence on the night of July 7, 2023, when Columbus police were called at 9:41 p.m. to the 1200 block of Gazebo Way at Arbor Pointe Apartments. Officers found him suffering from gunshot wounds and rushed him to Piedmont Columbus Regional, but the hope of that summer night gave way to tragedy the next morning. On July 8, 2023, he died from his injuries, and Deputy Coroner Elizabeth Allison pronounced him dead at 9:02 a.m.
The case then passed into the hands of the Columbus Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit, which began working through the shooting scene and the long trail that followed.
For a long stretch, the killing appeared to sit in that painful space between public grief and public answers. Then, according to the Columbus Police Department, investigators identified Aquiles Saunders as a suspect in June 2024 and secured a murder warrant for his arrest. Months later, on March 14, 2025, Saunders was taken into custody in North Carolina by the U.S. Marshals, extradited back to Columbus, and charged with murder. Police said he was scheduled to appear in Recorder's Court on March 19, 2025.
The case did not stop with one name. Reporting that followed the first arrest said investigators moved on a second suspect, Jaylen Paige, who was charged with murder in Bobby Lyons' death just days later. That reporting also said Paige was already being held in jail on a separate murder offense when authorities announced the new charge. The official police release on Saunders had already hinted that the investigation was still widening, stating that more arrests were pending, which gave the case the feel of something detectives believed involved more than a single actor and more than a single turn of violence.
What emerges from the available online reporting is the story of a teenager who was found wounded at an apartment complex on a July night, died the following morning, and whose case took nearly two years to produce a publicly announced arrest. As of the sources reviewed, there are public reports of Saunders being arrested and charged with murder, and Paige being charged as a second suspect, but I did not find reliable online reporting showing a completed trial, conviction, or final court resolution in the case.
