In the summer of 2023, the life of Walter Cleveland Smith Jr., a 28-year-old Black male from Augusta, Georgia, was tragically cut short. Born in Augusta on July 9, 1995, Smith was a familiar face in his community. On the evening of July 15, 2023, just six days after his 28th birthday, violence erupted on the 2100 block of Lumpkin Road, a place he called home.
