In the early morning hours of August 19, 2023, the life of 38-year-old Calvin Thomas Hugley Jr. was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire. A Black male, Hugley found himself at a large gathering at a residence on Woodard Avenue in Macon, Georgia, a place said to be operating as an unlicensed after-hours establishment. Shortly after 3 a.m., a dispute among several individuals at the party escalated, leading to an exchange of gunfire that would have fatal consequences for Hugley.
When Bibb County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, responding to calls of shots fired, they discovered Hugley lying unresponsive in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The violence of that morning was not limited to Hugley's death; two women and another man were also struck by bullets. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening, and they were transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify 24-year-old Dequavia Pollard as the primary suspect in Hugley's death. Five months later, on January 19, 2024, Pollard was taken into custody by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office. He was subsequently charged with murder and six counts of aggravated assault in connection with the August shooting.
Pollard's legal troubles did not end there. At the time of his arrest for Hugley's murder, he was also implicated in a separate fatal shooting that had occurred just days earlier, on January 14, 2024. In that case, he faces an additional charge of murder and one count of criminal street gang activity. Dequavia Pollard is currently being held at the Bibb County Jail without bond.
