In the late hours of a warm August evening in Covington, Georgia, the life of 25-year-old Lamar Kali Shuler Jr., a Black / African American male, was cut short in a burst of violence that has left his family searching for answers. On August 29, 2023, Shuler was at his home when he received a text message from an individual he believed to be a friend, summoning him to a meeting in the Oakwood area. Trusting the sender, he left his residence and drove to the arranged location. When he became unresponsive to calls and texts, his concerned mother and sister used his phone's location to track him down.
Their search led them to Oak Terrace Drive, where they made a horrifying discovery. Shuler was in his car, having been shot multiple times with a rifle. Despite their desperate attempts at CPR and the swift response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at Piedmont Newton Hospital. The initial investigation by the Newton County Sheriff's Office revealed that a white 2021 Nissan Altima, which Shuler was in, had collided with an unoccupied parked car in the driveway of a residence on the street. The responding officer found two females at the scene, crying out that their son had been shot.
Known to his loved ones as 'Kali,' Shuler was remembered as a devoted father to his young son, a loving partner, and a cherished son and brother. He had a passion for music and boxing, and his sense of humor and confidence left a lasting impression on those who knew him. His family has been left devastated by their loss, grappling with the brutal and sudden nature of his death.
As of now, the investigation into Lamar Kali Shuler Jr.'s murder remains active. Despite the efforts of the Newton County deputies, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. His family has made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, hoping to bring justice to the person or persons responsible for taking his life. They are in the process of raising funds to offer a reward for any information that leads to a break in the case.
