Antiwan Malik Williams, a 23-year-old Black man described by loved ones as loyal and funny, lost his life in a shooting on August 31, 2023. The incident that ended his life unfolded within his own family circle at an apartment in southwest Atlanta.
In the early morning hours, Williams was with relatives, including his cousin, Ronald Adams. According to prosecutors, other family members had warned Adams about his drug use shortly before he began acting in a bizarre manner.
Adams then picked up one of several handguns in the apartment and fired at Williams. Atlanta police officers responded to the residence, and Williams was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Later that same day, police arrested Ronald Adams at the apartment. He was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail on initial charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.
The case concluded in November 2024 when Adams pleaded guilty to reduced charges, including voluntary manslaughter. He entered an Alford plea, a legal mechanism that allowed him to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence to likely secure a conviction at trial. Adams’s attorney described the killing as “a family tragedy,” stating that his client cared for his cousin and was grieving his death.
Following his guilty plea, Ronald Adams was sentenced to 20 years in prison, to be followed by five years of probation. With this sentence, the legal proceedings in the death of Antiwan Williams concluded in November 2024.
