In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, DeQwayvious Tremayne Kleckley, a 19-year-old male, lost his life in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The incident unfolded on November 7, 2023, at a residence on Dayspring Trace. Gwinnett County Police officers were dispatched to the home shortly before 10:30 p.m. following a report of a domestic dispute.
As they approached the house on foot, the sound of gunshots shattered the evening quiet.
Upon reaching the driveway, officers discovered both DeQwayvious and his 46-year-old mother suffering from gunshot wounds. While officers rendered aid until emergency medical personnel arrived, a man was seen fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Both victims were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Several days later, on November 11, 2023, DeQwayvious Tremayne Kleckley succumbed to his injuries. His mother survived the shooting but sustained severe injuries.
The investigation quickly identified Terrance Alonzo Washington, 44, of Americus, as the suspect. It was determined that Washington had been in a relationship with Kleckley's mother. The motive for the shooting was believed to be domestic-related. Washington was apprehended several hours after the incident in Warner Robbins after he fled the scene in Kleckley's pickup truck. He was subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including felony murder, malice murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as he had a prior conviction for aggravated assault.
In June 2025, Terrance Alonzo Washington pleaded guilty to felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Following his plea, he was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years, without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors stated that on the day of the shooting, Washington was intoxicated at his girlfriend's home and refused to leave. When she called the police, he followed her and her son into the driveway as they were attempting to leave and opened fire, shooting Kleckley in the head.
