In the fading days of 2023, a tragedy unfolded in Griffin, Georgia, cutting short the life of a dedicated public servant. Marc Andrew McIntyre, a 55-year-old male and a sergeant with the Spalding County Sheriff's Office, was fatally shot in the line of duty on Friday, December 29, 2023. A veteran of the U.S. Army, McIntyre had served his community as a law enforcement officer for over a decade.
The series of events leading to McIntyre's untimely death began with a call for a wellness
check at a residence on Vineyard Road. McIntyre and another deputy responded to the home of 57-year-old Todd Lamont Harper. As the deputies were in the yard attempting to make contact, Harper allegedly opened fire with a shotgun from an upstairs window, striking McIntyre in the head. The second deputy sustained a hand injury while seeking cover and returning fire.
What followed was a tense, hours-long standoff. The wounded deputy was unable to immediately reach his fallen colleague due to the ongoing gunfire. Eventually, specialized SWAT teams were able to extract McIntyre and transport him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. After barricading himself inside the home for a significant period, Harper was taken into custody. Law enforcement had to use armored vehicles to breach the residence before they could apprehend him.
In the aftermath of the standoff, Todd Lamont Harper was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Sergeant Marc McIntyre. As he was taken from the scene, he reportedly remained combative and issued threats to other deputies. Neighbors and authorities have indicated that Harper may have had a history of mental health issues.
