In the summer of 2022, a young man's life was cut short in a fatal shooting in Pike County, Georgia. Nineteen-year-old James Knight of Griffin was killed on the evening of July 16, 2022, in what authorities described as a targeted act of violence stemming from an illicit drug transaction. The incident took place outside a residence on Patton Road, where Knight was fatally shot.
Investigators quickly identified suspects in connection with the shooting.
The day after the incident, law enforcement announced they had secured a murder warrant for 18-year-old Jaiden Chappell, also from Griffin. Chappell was taken into custody shortly thereafter and held in the Pike County Jail. Authorities indicated that at least one other individual was believed to be involved in the incident and that the investigation was ongoing.
Further investigation led to the identification and arrest of two additional suspects. A 14-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and charged with being a party to the crime of felony murder. The third suspect was identified as 19-year-old Antonio Murgado Jr. His arrest was carried out by the U.S. Marshals Service in neighboring Fayette County. During the attempt to take him into custody, an officer-involved shooting occurred. At the time of his alleged involvement in Knight's death, Murgado was reportedly out on bond for separate charges in two other counties.
Following her arrest, the initial felony murder charge against Jaiden Chappell was expanded to include armed robbery, use of a telecommunication device to facilitate a crime, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and making false statements to law enforcement. The case against all three suspects continues to move through the legal system.
