In the early morning hours of July 14, 2020, the life of 46-year-old Robert Donnell Brown was cut short in the front yard of a residence on Melrose Avenue in Griffin, Georgia. Police responded to calls of a person shot at approximately 12:15 a.m. and discovered Brown deceased at the scene. The investigation that followed painted a picture of a dispute that had turned deadly.
Investigators learned that Brown had been involved in an altercation with multiple individuals present at the location. The argument was reportedly over stolen property that Brown was trying to get back. It was during this confrontation that he was shot three times in the back. Though related to his assailant, Brown did not know for sure who had taken his property and was simply seeking its return.
Within hours of the shooting, law enforcement identified 16-year-old Malik Yarbrough as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody with the assistance of the Clayton County Sheriff's Office later that same day. Despite his age, Yarbrough was charged as an adult with felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Yarbrough’s case proceeded to trial, where he claimed to have acted in self-defense. However, a Spalding County jury deliberated for a mere 25 minutes before rejecting his claim and finding him guilty on all counts, including malice murder and felony murder, on March 9, 2022. Taking into account Yarbrough's significant criminal history and what the judge described as a lack of remorse, he was deemed 'permanently incorrigible.' On June 8, 2022, Malik Yarbrough, then 18, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
