In the quiet town of Statesboro, Georgia, a tragic event unfolded on the evening of February 29, 2024, forever altering the lives of two families. Christopher Joyce, a 20-year-old Black man, was found deceased alongside 23-year-old Jamaryce Mincey in a room at the Days Inn. The discovery was made by hotel management who were conducting a welfare check.
Both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds in what was quickly determined to be a double homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Joyce and Mincey led authorities to a single suspect, Kentaevious Raeshon Davis, who was 20 years old at the time of the incident. Evidence presented during the subsequent trial revealed a grim picture of the final hours for the two victims. A forensic pathologist testified that Mincey had been shot once in the head, while Joyce had been shot more than 10 times in his upper body, including his arms, back, and head. Security camera footage from the hotel showed Davis leaving the room where the two men were later found.
Investigators located and arrested Davis in Tattnall County on March 6, 2024. During the investigation, a Glock 9mm pistol was discovered in his girlfriend's car. Ballistic testing confirmed that the 13 spent cartridge casings found in the motel room were fired from this weapon. The motive for the killings was not explicitly detailed, but testimony during the trial indicated the presence of 'bath salts,' a type of psychoactive drug, which was said to cause confusion, paranoia, and aggression. Toxicologists confirmed the presence of dimethylpentylone and pentylone, or isomers of these drugs, in the systems of both Joyce and Mincey.
In November 2025, a Bulloch County jury found Kentaevious Davis guilty on all eight counts against him, including two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. After an hour of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous verdict. Davis was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, Christopher Joyce's aunt, Natasha Joyce, delivered a heart-wrenching impact statement, expressing the family's profound grief and questioning the senselessness of the violence that took her nephew's life, who was affectionately known as 'Tootie.'
