The tragic events unfolded in the 1800 block of Blair Road, where law enforcement would later find Maichele suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders who transported him to Brooks County Hospital, he was ultimately pronounced dead.
The investigation into Maichele's death quickly focused on a family member. Authorities identified his 27-year-old nephew, Jonah Kenney of Quitman, as the primary suspect. Reports indicate that the two men had been involved in an argument earlier in the day, though the specifics of their disagreement have not been publicly disclosed. A break in the case came later that same evening when a Georgia State Patrol trooper conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Kenney for unrelated violations. This encounter ultimately led to Kenney being questioned by GBI agents about the death of his uncle. Following this interview, Jonah Kenney was arrested and taken into custody.
Kenney has been formally charged in connection with the death of Jed Maichele.
