In the early evening of March 16, 2024, in Vidalia, Georgia, the lives of two young people from the nearby town of Soperton were tragically cut short by gunfire. Eighteen-year-old Iesha Esha Wicker, a Black female who was pregnant at the time, and 23-year-old Justin Godfrey were in the area of East Jenkins Street and Epstein Street when shots rang out around 5:02 p.m.
Both sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital, but they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
The investigation into the double homicide, which also claimed the life of Wicker's unborn child, quickly led to the identification of several suspects. Within days, law enforcement officials had taken three individuals into custody. Jaquan Quashon Jerome Jordan, 23, and Patrick Cornelius Hunt, 18, both from Mount Vernon, along with 16-year-old Kison Latrell King of McRae, were arrested. Jordan and Hunt faced a litany of charges, including two counts of malice murder, one count of feticide, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jordan was also charged with being a party to a crime. King was charged with two counts of felony murder and five counts of aggravated assault.
As the investigation continued, two more arrests were made in April of the same year. Michael Anthony, Jr., 19, of Lyons, and Fitzroy Anthony Ellis, 18, of Vidalia, were also implicated in the murders. They were each charged with two counts of felony murder and five counts of aggravated assault, bringing the total number of individuals arrested to five. All the suspects were booked into the Toombs County Detention Center as the community grappled with the senseless violence that had taken three lives.
In February 2025, a significant development occurred in the case as Patrick Cornelius Hunt was found guilty on charges of murder and feticide. The trial brought some measure of closure to the families of the victims, though the legal proceedings for the other four defendants were still pending. The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly released by law enforcement, and the investigation remains ongoing with the possibility of further arrests. The case has left a lasting scar on the Vidalia community and serves as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence.
