In the winter of 2022, a domestic dispute in Vidalia, Georgia, escalated into a tragic double homicide, claiming the lives of 24-year-old Latorey Denise Harden and her mother. On the afternoon of January 6th, law enforcement was dispatched to a residence on East 5th Street following reports of a domestic disturbance. Before they could arrive, a second call came in, this time reporting a shooting at the same address.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a grim scene. Latorey Harden was found deceased, and her 42-year-old mother, Pamela Harden, was critically wounded. Pamela was rushed to a hospital in Savannah for treatment, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The shooter had fled the scene in Pamela Harden's blue 2021 Nissan Rogue.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect, 27-year-old Joshua Magual Sanders of Birmingham, Alabama. A multi-state manhunt ensued, and on January 12, 2022, Sanders was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in Flagstaff, Arizona, as he was getting off a bus. He was subsequently extradited back to Georgia to face a litany of charges.
In April 2022, a Toombs County grand jury indicted Sanders on 15 counts, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to a child, as Latorey's young child was present during the commission of the crimes. During the trial in May 2023, the prosecution presented a compelling case with testimony from over a dozen witnesses. Sanders testified in his own defense, claiming self-defense, but the jury was not swayed. After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury found Joshua Sanders guilty on all 15 charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of justice to the tragic and untimely deaths of Latorey and Pamela Harden.
