In the spring of 2024, the life of 19-year-old Antavius Tyrell Holton of Riverdale, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On the evening of Friday, March 29, 2024, Holton was fatally shot at a Walmart on Pavilion Parkway in Fayetteville. The incident, which also resulted in the injury of a 9-year-old girl, was not a random act of violence.
The shooter was identified as 19-year-old Adrian Jelks, an employee of the Walmart where the shooting occurred. According to authorities, the shooting was a planned and isolated incident. An argument between Jelks and Holton preceded the fatal encounter. As Holton was leaving the store, Jelks allegedly pulled a gun from his Walmart vest and shot him in the back. Holton was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The 9-year-old girl, an innocent bystander, was also struck by a bullet but was reported to be in stable condition and has since been released from the hospital.
Following the shooting, Jelks fled the scene in a vehicle, which was later found abandoned. A manhunt ensued, and Jelks was considered armed and dangerous. A second individual, 19-year-old Sandra Romero-Nunez, was arrested and charged as a party to the crime for murder and aggravated assault. After being on the run for five days, Adrian Jelks turned himself in to the College Park Police Department on April 3, 2024.
Adrian Jelks was subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault. During his trial, Jelks testified that he knew Holton and claimed that Holton had threatened him months prior to the shooting. In October 2024, a jury found Jelks guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and gun possession. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 25 years.
