An 18-year-old male, Daquan Gillett, was enjoying a day with his twin brother and friends at Kenwood Park in Fayetteville, Georgia, on May 7, 2021. The group was celebrating with a water gun fight, a scene of youthful joy that would soon turn tragic. The playful atmosphere shifted when another group of young men, led by 20-year-old Sean Allen of Jonesboro, confronted Gillett and his friends.
The initial verbal confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, Allen, who was illegally carrying a loaded firearm, dropped his weapon. After the first scuffle ended, Allen retrieved his gun and initiated a second fight with Gillett. He dropped the firearm again, and in the ensuing scramble, Gillett managed to pick it up and began to retreat. At that point, an associate of Allen's handed him a second firearm. Allen then pursued the fleeing Gillett, firing multiple shots. Gillett was struck twice, once in the back of the leg and a fatal shot to the back of the head. His twin brother was by his side as he lay dying on a sidewalk. Emergency services transported Gillett to Piedmont Fayette Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The entire incident was captured on the park's surveillance cameras, providing crucial evidence for investigators. Following the shooting, Sean Allen and his friends fled the scene. However, Allen later turned himself in to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. He was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. In December 2021, a Fayette County jury found Sean Allen guilty on both charges after a weeklong trial and two days of deliberation. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
