On the evening of Sunday, March 31, 2024, a gathering believed to be Easter-related was taking place in a parking lot behind a liquor store on Highway 85 in Woodbury, Georgia. A large crowd of people, estimated to be a couple hundred, were present when a fight suddenly erupted. In the chaos that ensued, several individuals began shooting at each other multiple times. During the altercation, Jaylen Jamal McGruder, a 22-year-old male from nearby Pine Mountain, was struck by a gunshot to the chest.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:40 p.m. A police officer and a Meriwether County Deputy administered CPR to McGruder until paramedics could arrive. He was then rushed by ambulance to a local hospital in Thomaston, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Woodbury Police Department to lead the investigation into his death.
Jaylen, born on May 14, 2001, in Lagrange, Georgia, was a father to a daughter and a son, and also a bonus father to two other children. Described as a good-hearted gentleman with a mischievous laugh and a contagious smile that could light up a room, he was a hardworking man dedicated to his children and family. He had graduated from Callaway High School in 2020. His family and friends, including a close-knit group he worked with, were left to mourn the sudden and tragic loss. As of early April 2024, the investigation into his death is active and ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
