In the early morning hours of May 16, 2024, the life of 25-year-old Area Barnett, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in the Collier Heights neighborhood of northwest Atlanta. Her body was discovered by a film crew at the intersection of Collier Drive and Harwell Road, near the Interstate 285 overpass. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that Barnett had been shot multiple times.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, the shooting is
believed to have stemmed from an altercation at a nearby bus stop. Authorities reported that the shooter fled the scene on foot after the incident. Homicide detectives were called to the scene to canvass the area and search for any witnesses who might be able to provide information.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Atlanta Police Department has urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
Barnett was remembered by her loved ones as a kind and vibrant person who was the 'life of the party.' She was a valued employee at a Walmart on Cascade Road, where her manager described her as a 'very hard worker.' Her friends and coworkers, deeply affected by her sudden and violent death, have been vocal in their calls for justice. They have held vigils and created a memorial in her honor at the site where she was found, a testament to the life she lived and the community that now mourns her loss.
