In what was supposed to be a routine child custody exchange, a man lost his life in a tragic and violent encounter. Kevin Spruill, a 30-year-old Black male from Atlanta, Georgia, was shot and killed on the evening of Monday, November 9, 2020. The fatal incident unfolded at a Chevron gas station located on Forest Parkway in Clayton County. Spruill had accompanied his girlfriend to the location to pick up her children from her ex-boyfriend, Tony Stevenson.
An argument erupted between the
woman and Stevenson over car keys, quickly escalating into a physical altercation. Witnesses reported that Stevenson bit the woman on her arm. Seeing the confrontation escalate, Spruill attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation. As he approached the vehicle, another man who was with Stevenson, identified as Reginald Hardy, allegedly opened fire. Spruill was struck by multiple gunshots and was found lying on the ground by responding Clayton County Police officers.
Following the shooting, Stevenson allegedly forced the woman and her four children into his vehicle and fled the scene. They were later found unharmed at a nearby hotel where the vehicle had been abandoned. Authorities subsequently issued arrest warrants for both Stevenson and Hardy.
Reginald Hardy later surrendered to the police. He faced several charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Tony Stevenson was sought on charges of battery-family violence and cruelty to children. Both men were described by police as being armed and dangerous.
