In the early evening of May 7, 2023, a dispute that began in an Atlanta park escalated into a burst of gunfire that left two men dead and another wounded. The incident, which unfolded in the Grove Park neighborhood, claimed the life of 23-year-old Dantavious Gutherie.
The violence erupted around 6:30 p.m. on Francis Place Northwest, near the Grove Park Recreation Center. According to Atlanta police, an argument that started at a nearby park spilled over into the residential street.
A witness reported seeing a car pull up to a home, from which two men emerged and began shooting. One neighbor recounted seeing a man with a mask and a gun at his thigh before hearing a skirmish and a volley of about 10 gunshots.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Dantavious Gutherie and another man, 24-year-old Quinta Tutman, with critical gunshot wounds. Both men were rushed to a local hospital, but their injuries proved to be fatal. A third man, who was in his late 20s, was also shot in the leg and taken to the hospital in a private vehicle; he was reported to be in stable condition.
Family members of one of the victims suggested that the shooting was likely gang-related. Investigators recovered a gun at the scene that was believed to have been used in the shooting after a neighbor found it under a parked car and turned it over to the police. In the immediate aftermath, the Atlanta Police Department stated that the investigation into the triple shooting was ongoing as they worked to determine the specific circumstances that led to the deadly encounter. As of now, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or identified suspects in the case.
