A simmering dispute over money at a family gathering tragically escalated, leaving 50-year-old Cedric Maxwell, a Black/African American male, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded on the evening of June 22, 2024, near the pool of the Arium Peachtree Creek apartment complex on Peachtree Creek Circle in DeKalb County, a suburban area of Atlanta, Georgia.
Authorities responded to a 'person shot' call just after 6 p.m. and discovered Maxwell's body at the scene.
According to police, what began as a verbal altercation between Maxwell and 31-year-old Dario Howell, an extended family member, turned violent when Howell allegedly drew a handgun and shot Maxwell in the back. The two men were reportedly familiar with one another, and the shooting occurred in the midst of a large family event.
Howell was quickly apprehended at the scene without incident. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the DeKalb County Jail. He now faces charges of felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with Maxwell's death and is being held without bond as the investigation continues.
