On a summer day in Douglas, Georgia, the life of two-year-old Nakyzi Odums, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On July 3, 2024, in the bustling parking lot of a Walmart, a sudden "pop" pierced the air. Nakyzi's parents, Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks, were just feet away at a fireworks stand when they heard the sound and rushed back to their vehicle.
Inside the car, they found their young son with a gunshot wound.
Witnesses reported that Nakyzi had been left alone in the front seat of the car. It is believed that a handgun, possibly located in the side door of the vehicle, was within the toddler's reach. In a devastating turn of events, the young boy had accidentally shot himself. First responders treated him at the scene before he was taken to a local hospital.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Nakyzi was transferred to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he passed away on July 6, 2024. The Douglas Police Department launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragedy, focusing on how the child was able to gain access to the firearm. As of early 2026, the investigation was reported to be ongoing, and it remained unclear if any charges would be filed against the parents in connection with their son's death.
