In the early morning hours of July 5, 2024, a dispute that began inside an Albany, Georgia nightclub tragically ended with the death of 21-year-old Daveyon Wakefield. The Black / African American male was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Reflextions Lounge on Thornton Drive. The incident, which also left three other people injured, is believed to be gang-related.
The violence reportedly erupted after a physical altercation inside the club moved outdoors. Once in the parking lot, a significant exchange of gunfire occurred, with as many as 100 shell casings found at the scene. The three other individuals who were shot were transported to a local hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.
In the days following the shooting, the Albany Police Department announced several arrests. Donnell Germain Thomas, 19, was charged with murder in connection with Wakefield's death. Others taken into custody included 19-year-old Cosha Zyemma Brown and 21-year-old Lakeisha Wingfield, who were both charged with affray. Jayquan Levante Miller, 26, was charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Jateyveon Decorric Kimbrough, 25, on a charge of aggravated assault. Police also announced they were seeking 22-year-old Ricardriana Sha'toya Sloan in connection with the fight that preceded the deadly shootout. Authorities stated that the investigation was ongoing and that more arrests were anticipated.
