In the spring of 2016, a heated argument between two men in Albany, Georgia, escalated to a fatal exchange of gunfire, leaving both involved dead. The life of 35-year-old Bryan Collier was cut short on Friday, April 15, 2016, when he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
The violent encounter took place two days earlier, on the evening of Wednesday, April 13, at the Nottingham North Apartments located at 2401 Nottingham Way. When Albany police officers responded to a call about a shooting, they discovered a grim scene. Herbert Garner Mitchell, 56, was found deceased, and Collier was critically injured with several gunshot wounds. According to witnesses at the apartment complex, the two men had been engaged in a fierce argument that quickly spiraled into a close-proximity shootout.
Emergency medical services transported Collier to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where he fought for his life for two days. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead at 2:58 a.m. on that Friday morning.
Following Collier's death, authorities indicated that the investigation into the shootings would not proceed as a criminal inquiry, as both individuals involved in the altercation were deceased. There were no reports of any other suspects being sought or any arrests made in connection with the incident. The case was seemingly closed with the deaths of the two men who, according to witness accounts, shot one another.
