In the pre-dawn hours of July 22, 2024, a U.S. Navy Reservist's life was tragically cut short in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Christopher Estrada-Petersen, a 25-year-old Black or African American male, was found shot to death at a BP gas station located at the corner of Rockbridge and Hambrick roads. DeKalb County police responded to a call about the shooting at approximately 5 a.m. and discovered his body at the scene. The investigation into his death is ongoing, and as of late July 2024, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Estrada-Petersen, who also went by the name Christian, was a Petty Officer in the Navy Reserve, having joined in 2022. He had recently returned home and was serving at the Navy Reserve Center in Atlanta. His family described him as a loving and dedicated individual who was the oldest of five children. To support himself and his family, he also worked as an Uber driver, though it remains unclear if he was working at the time of his death.
The motive behind the shooting remains a mystery to investigators, who have not yet determined if Estrada-Petersen was targeted or the victim of a random act of violence. His family, who had already endured the pain of losing his younger sister to gun violence in October 2023, is now faced with the devastating loss of another child. Friends and fellow service members remembered him as someone who was dedicated to both his country and his family, expressing his desire to be close to home in case of another tragedy. The investigation by the DeKalb County Police Department continues as they seek to bring those responsible for Christopher Estrada-Petersen's death to justice.
