The male teenager's life was cut short on a Tuesday night in the breezeway of an apartment complex on Bouldercrest Road. The incident that led to Andre's death involved a shootout between two groups of people for reasons that remain unclear.
The shooting occurred just three months after the family lost Andre's older brother, 23-year-old U.S.
Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson. Roger was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy in his home in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The Fortson family, originally from DeKalb County, was still mourning this profound loss when tragedy struck again. Andre, who was about to begin his senior year at McNair High School, had been a source of comfort for his grieving mother and younger sister. He had aspirations of following in his brother's footsteps and joining the Air Force after graduation.
According to reports, neighbors heard the gunfire and the sound of cars driving away, leaving Andre bleeding in the breezeway. One neighbor attempted to perform CPR to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Many who knew him described Andre as a respectful and good-natured young man who was never in any trouble.
In the wake of the shooting, DeKalb County police identified 20-year-old Quintavious Zellner as one of the individuals involved in the shootout. Zellner was subsequently arrested and booked into the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault.
