In a tragic turn of events on August 12, 2024, 17-year-old Santino Shovely lost his life in Decatur, Georgia. The male teenager and his 21-year-old brother, Broderick Shovely III, were discovered with critical gunshot wounds in the basement of a residence on Emerald Lake Drive in the Emerald Estates neighborhood.
Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the two brothers severely injured.
They were both transported to a local hospital for medical attention, but tragically, neither survived their injuries. One of the brothers succumbed to his wounds on the way to the hospital, while the other passed away after arrival.
DeKalb County police detectives quickly launched an investigation into the double homicide. Their efforts led them to identify two suspects approximately 10 miles away in the Wishing Well Hills neighborhood near Conley. The two men, identified as Charles Kishawn Thorne of Conley and Nickolas Povilaitis of Norcross, were taken into custody without incident. One of the suspects was reportedly found wearing the same clothing he had on during the shooting.
Following their arrest, both Thorne and Povilaitis were booked into the DeKalb County jail. They each face serious charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of criminal attempt to commit a felony. The motive behind the fatal shooting has not been released by the authorities. The community has since come together to support the family of the two brothers.
