In the early morning hours of October 5, 2024, a dispute in Fort Valley, Georgia, tragically escalated, ending the life of 37-year-old Naun Mendez Melendez, a Hispanic male. The incident unfolded on the 400 block of Boulevard Street after Melendez, seeking to purchase marijuana, knocked on the door of a nearby home. When he was told that none was available for sale, he became agitated and began throwing beer cans at the residence.
From inside the home, an 18-year-old named Jaqwan Johnson emerged to confront Melendez in a yard across the street. The confrontation quickly turned violent when Johnson struck Melendez in the head with a firearm. In response, Melendez produced a knife from his shorts. Johnson then fired a single shot, striking Melendez in the chest before fleeing the scene. Fort Valley police officers were dispatched to the location around 3:23 a.m. following reports of a fight involving weapons. Upon their arrival, they discovered Melendez lying face down. Despite their life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene by the Peach County Coroner.
The Fort Valley Police Department, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, launched a homicide investigation. A person of interest was quickly identified, and Jaqwan Johnson was taken into custody. Rather than proceed to trial, Johnson, then 19, pleaded guilty to charges of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the death, sometimes referred to in court documents as Anahury Melendez.
In February 2026, Jaqwan Johnson was sentenced for his role in the fatal encounter. He received a sentence of 45 years, with the initial 20 years to be served in the Georgia Department of Corrections. The District Attorney noted the senselessness of the confrontation that led to a man's death.
