In the early evening of Thursday, January 19, 2023, the life of 23-year-old Keshon Rylo Cornish, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded at approximately 5:42 p.m. in the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast, in Washington, D.C. a detail that situates this tragedy in a specific neighborhood of the nation's capital.
Responding to reports of a shooting, members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Sixth District arrived at the scene to find Cornish unconscious and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, their efforts to save his life were unsuccessful. Cornish was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The subsequent investigation by the authorities officially classified his death as a homicide, confirming that he had died as a result of the gunshot wounds he sustained. Although a resident of Lanham, Maryland, in the neighboring Prince George's County, his life came to a violent end in the District.
In the wake of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department has been actively investigating the case but has not publicly released any information regarding potential suspects or a lookout for individuals involved. To encourage community assistance in solving this crime, a reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Cornish's death. Funeral services to honor and remember Keshon Cornish were held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Christ Church in Cheverly, Maryland, with his interment taking place in Sumter, South Carolina.
