In the late hours of a summer night in Washington, D.C., the life of 37-year-old Rayfone Gassaway, a male resident of Alexandria, Virginia, was cut short by violence. On Sunday, July 19, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 3400 block of Stanton Road, Southeast, for a report of a man down.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Gassaway unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel who responded to the scene could find no signs of life. Gassaway was pronounced dead at the location, his body later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The initial investigation into his death was handled by detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. The department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide.

On Thursday, December 2, 2021, the Metropolitan Police Department announced an arrest in connection with Rayfone Gassaway's death. Nineteen-year-old Earl Isaac, III, was taken into custody by detectives. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed for his alleged role in the fatal shooting.
