In the winter of 2024, a grim discovery was made in a wooded area of a Washington, D.C. park. On Friday, February 16th, the remains of 29-year-old Leon Powell, a Black male from Southeast, DC, were found in Fort Greble Park, located off the 4300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, SW. Authorities reported that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
Powell had been reported missing since November of the previous year.
The discovery prompted an immediate investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy revealed that Leon Powell had sustained gunshot injuries. His death was subsequently ruled a homicide. It remains unclear when or where the shooting occurred.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with Powell's death, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation is ongoing, and the Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his murder.
