In the early hours of Sunday, November 27, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Corey Riggins Jr. was tragically cut short in a shooting in Southeast Washington, D.C. At approximately 12:44 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of gunshots in the 4300 block of Wheeler Road, Southeast. Upon arrival, they discovered Riggins suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported him to a local hospital, but despite all life-saving efforts, he
was pronounced dead. This incident marked the fourth time Riggins had been shot in his young life, with the first attack occurring when he was just 15 years old. That initial shooting was severe, with bullets piercing his heart, liver, and stomach, leading to a lengthy and difficult recovery.
Despite the efforts of his family and even medical professionals to guide him away from the dangers of the streets, Riggins remained in a perilous environment. His mother, Carla Lawson, described him as a strong-minded and helpful person who was friendly with their neighbors.
As of early 2024, no arrests have been made directly in connection with Corey Riggins Jr.'s murder. However, a significant development in the investigation emerged when it was revealed that one of the firearms used in his killing was also linked to the tragic Mother's Day shooting death of 10-year-old Arianna Davis in 2023. While three men were charged in Arianna's death, authorities have stated there is no evidence to connect them to Riggins's case. The Metropolitan Police Department continues to offer a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death.
