In the early evening of March 7, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 2700 block of Bruce Place in Southeast Washington, D.C. When the chaos subsided, 23-year-old Dana Faulkner, a male resident of Southeast D.C. and a new father, was found suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the back of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man was also struck by the gunfire but was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident, which occurred around 7:45 p.m., set off a wider police investigation as the events of that night slowly unraveled.
Roughly ten minutes after the shooting on Bruce Place, a second scene emerged more than two miles away at the intersection of Wheeler Road and Mississippi Avenue. There, police discovered 15-year-old Abdul Fuller unconscious and suffering from a critical gunshot wound, also to the back of his head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries two days later. Investigators later determined that Fuller had been present at the initial shooting on Bruce Place and was driven to the location where he was found. It is believed he was inside a stolen Hyundai Elantra from which three individuals emerged and opened fire, striking Faulkner. Evidence suggested shots were also fired inside the vehicle.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrests of two individuals. In December 2023, approximately nine months after the killings, members of the U.S. Marshals Service's Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended 19-year-old Kevin Foster of Northeast Washington. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder. According to court documents, surveillance footage and social media records allegedly linked Foster to the crime, identifying him as the driver of the stolen Hyundai. Police believe a dispute between neighborhood crews may have been a motive.
Further investigation led to a second arrest in June 2024. A 17-year-old male from Northeast, D.C., was taken into custody in Jacksonville, Florida, and extradited to Washington to face charges. He has been charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Dana Faulkner's death. The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to piece together the events that led to the violent deaths of a young father and a teenager.
