In Washington, D.C., the violent deaths of two individuals named Traevon Green, both occurring under tragic and unresolved circumstances, have left families grieving and communities seeking answers. Though their cases are distinct, the common thread of their untimely deaths highlights the persistent issue of gun violence in the city.
One of these individuals was a young man full of promise, 16-year-old Traevon Green.
On the evening of March 21, 2023, at approximately 9:02 pm, Green was riding a motorbike with another teenager in the 2200 block of Alabama Avenue, SE. In a sudden burst of violence, individuals in a stolen car opened fire on the two youths. Green, a resident of Southeast D.C., was struck and tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The other teenager was seriously injured in the attack.
Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted attack, although a specific motive has not been publicly identified. A few hours after the shooting, a stolen Kia Optima, believed to be the vehicle used by the assailants, was found engulfed in flames in the 2800 block of Pomeroy Road SE. Despite reviewing video footage, including from Metro buses in the vicinity, the Metropolitan Police Department has not yet publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in the case. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in solving the murder of the young man, who was known for his active involvement in the community, often volunteering with local organizations.
In a separate and unrelated incident the previous year, 33-year-old Treyvon Green also lost his life to gun violence. On the morning of May 5, 2022, at around 9:26 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 2300 block of Green Street, SE. Inside a residence, they discovered Treyvon Green suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident was particularly alarming as it was the second fatal shooting on that same block in less than a 24-hour period; another man, Davon Sullivan, had been killed there the previous day. While police have been investigating both homicides, it has not been publicly stated whether the two events are connected. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with Treyvon Green's death, and no suspects have been publicly named. The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is actively investigating the case and has offered a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
