A flash of purple was a common and welcome sight on the streets of Washington, D.C., often heralding the arrival of Dzhoy Zuckerman on one of their customized bicycles. A beloved fixture in the city's cycling community, 27-year-old Dzhoy Zuckerman, who was a proud member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and used they/them pronouns, was known for a charismatic and jovial personality that could brighten anyone's day.
Born in Bobrovitsya, Ukraine, Dzhoy was adopted at age 8 and brought to a new home in D.C., where they grew into a person of many talents, mastering everything from magic tricks and juggling to complex STEM subjects. Their passion for cycling, however, became a defining part of their life, leading them to work as a bike messenger and to create and lead a weekly 33-mile ride known as the 'Purple Line Ride,' named for their favorite color.
The vibrant energy Dzhoy brought to the community was tragically extinguished in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 15, 2023. While cycling home, just a few blocks from their residence, Dzhoy was fatally shot in the 6100 block of 3rd Street NW. At approximately 12:08 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call for a man down and discovered Dzhoy at the scene. Emergency medical services found no signs of life, and they were pronounced dead. While some reports indicated the shooting occurred during an armed robbery, police have not officially confirmed the specific circumstances surrounding the homicide.
The loss of Dzhoy Zuckerman sent reverberations of grief through the extensive network of friends and fellow cyclists who knew them. In the days that followed, the community came together to honor their memory. About 100 people, many decked out in purple, gathered for a memorial ride to celebrate the life of the person described as a 'local bike legend' and a 'ray of sunshine.' As of now, the investigation into Dzhoy's death is ongoing. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively seeking information from the public and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made.
