On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., the life of 19-year-old Zion Hollingsworth-Hayes was tragically cut short. The male victim from Silver Spring, Maryland, was found shot on Saturday, July 22, 2023, in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. The events of that night began to unfold around 9:53 p.m. when Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the 1400 block of Girard Street, Northwest, for a reported shooting.
There, they discovered 29-year-old Luke Whitaker suffering from gunshot wounds. Shortly thereafter, another call directed them to the 1400 block of Fairmont Street, Northwest, just a brief walk away, where they found Hollingsworth-Hayes, also shot. Despite the efforts of D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the double homicide led detectives to identify 33-year-old Jeremiah Jordan of Southeast, D.C., as the suspect. On September 8, 2023, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Jordan pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder while armed. Court documents and testimony revealed that the incident allegedly began with an argument between Jordan and the other victim, Luke Whitaker. Investigators utilized surveillance footage and text messages which they claim linked Jordan to the crime.
During court proceedings, a judge found that there was probable cause to believe that Jordan was the shooter and had not acted in self-defense, a claim his defense attorney put forward by suggesting Whitaker had initiated a physical altercation. The prosecution countered that the level of force used, reportedly nine bullets, was not indicative of self-defense. In May 2024, a grand jury indicted Jordan on charges including two counts of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jordan later rejected a plea deal offered by the prosecution. His trial is scheduled to take place in March of 2026.
