On a summer evening in Washington, D.C., a dispute turned fatal, leaving two men dead. 29-year-old Luke Whitaker, a male resident of Northwest, D.C., was shot and killed on Saturday, July 22, 2023. The incident unfolded at approximately 9:53 p.m. in the 1400 block of Girard Street, Northwest, a busy neighborhood with many people out and about.
Metropolitan Police Department officers from the Third District responded to a report of a shooting and discovered Whitaker at the scene with
gunshot wounds. He showed no signs of life and was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Shortly after finding Whitaker, officers located a second victim, 19-year-old Zion Hollingsworth-Hayes of Silver Spring, Maryland, in the 1400 block of Fairmont Street, Northwest. He too had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of 33-year-old Jeremiah Jordan of Southeast, D.C. on September 8, 2023. Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended him based on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. Jordan was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder while armed-premeditated.
Court documents and proceedings revealed that Jordan and Whitaker were seen arguing just before the shooting. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Whitaker shoving Jordan. In the ensuing court hearings, Jordan's defense argued the possibility of self-defense, stating that Whitaker had initiated the physical altercation. The prosecution, however, contended that a push did not justify the level of violence that followed. On May 22, 2024, a grand jury indicted Jordan on the murder charges, as well as firearm-related offenses.
