On the evening of August 1, 2023, a dispute escalated into a fatal shooting that ended the life of 26-year-old Darnell Gibson, a male resident of Washington, D.C. The incident occurred on the unit block of Forrester Street, Southwest, where Gibson was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
The events leading to the shooting reportedly began with a commotion in the hallway of an apartment building.
Gibson, who was in his apartment with his girlfriend, went to see what was happening and discovered an individual arguing with his next-door neighbor. Upon seeing that his own grill had been knocked over, Gibson began to argue with the individual. The argument continued as both men moved outside the building. When the individual reached his vehicle, he allegedly turned and fired at Gibson, who was on the walkway. Ballistics evidence indicated that at least 23 shots were fired, with six striking Gibson in the chest, arms, and back.
Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. On December 8, 2023, 33-year-old Irv Duff Jr. was arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed. Duff's defense attorney has argued that his client acted in self-defense. During a court hearing, it was mentioned that Duff pleaded not guilty to the charges, which also include assault with intent to kill while armed and several firearm offenses. A trial is scheduled for April 2025.
