In the early hours of a cold Thursday morning in Washington, D.C., the quiet of the unit block of 18th Street in the Southeast quadrant of the city was shattered by a discovery that would soon launch a homicide investigation. On January 2, 2025, a male, identified as 48-year-old Eugene Jefferson, a Black man from Southeast, D.C., was found unresponsive in the hallway of a residential building. The call came in to the Metropolitan Police Department at approximately 12:23 a.m.
for an unconscious person, and upon their arrival, officers found Mr. Jefferson without any signs of life.
Emergency medical personnel from the D.C. Fire and EMS responded to the scene but could do nothing for the man, and he was pronounced deceased. His body was then transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the official cause of his death. The following day, the medical examiner concluded that Eugene Jefferson had died from a gunshot wound, and his death was officially ruled a homicide, prompting a full investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch.
As detectives began to piece together the events leading to Mr. Jefferson's death, the community was left with questions and concerns. The police department has reached out to the public for assistance in gathering information regarding this fatal shooting. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent crime. To date, no arrests have been made in the case, and the police have not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for Eugene Jefferson.
