On a Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C., the life of 19-year-old Andy Bonilla was cut short by gunfire. The incident occurred on January 26, 2020, in the 2900 block of Sherman Avenue, Northwest. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 12:56 p.m., officers from the Third District arrived to find Bonilla suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported him to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, but despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch to a suspect months later. On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, a 15-year-old juvenile male from Northwest, D.C., was arrested in connection with the shooting. The teenager was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed. Due to his status as a juvenile, his identity was not publicly released by the police.
Court documents later revealed more details about the events of that day. It is alleged that the suspect was in a stolen car with several other individuals when Andy Bonilla was pointed out to them. Occupants of the vehicle then opened fire on Bonilla, resulting in his death. Following the shooting, the group reportedly continued to drive around, smoked weed, and stopped at a Safeway before eventually separating about two hours later. The case against the juvenile suspect then proceeded through the justice system.
