In the summer of 2014, a beloved 76-year-old male shopkeeper, James Oh, became the victim of a fatal act of violence in Washington, D.C. On the evening of July 4th, as Mr. Oh and his wife were preparing to close their Gold Corner Market located in the 5500 block of Colorado Avenue NW, two masked men entered the store. At least one of the assailants was armed with a handgun and they demanded money.
The situation escalated when Mr.
Oh's wife, who was reportedly nervous, was unable to open the cash register. After she was struck by one of the robbers, Mr. Oh intervened and complied with their demands, handing over approximately $3,000. Despite his cooperation, one of the attackers struck him in the head with the handgun. The two suspects then fled the scene in a black Jeep that was later discovered to have been stolen earlier that day. The vehicle was subsequently recovered by authorities.
Following the brutal assault, James Oh was transported to a local hospital where he fought for his life for four days. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on July 8, 2014. The community was left in mourning for a man described as a kind and generous neighbor who was always willing to help others. A memorial of flowers and messages grew outside his shuttered market as residents and fellow merchants expressed their grief and shock.
The Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation and released surveillance video footage of the two suspects, described as Black males wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks, in an appeal to the public for information. A reward was also offered for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for the robbery and Mr. Oh's death. Despite these efforts, there have been no public announcements of any arrests made in the case, and the identities of the suspects remain unknown. The case is believed to be an unsolved homicide.
