On a late summer evening in Washington, D.C., a dispute escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of 33-year-old Brent Hayward. The male victim, from Gainesville, Virginia, was shot and killed on Saturday, August 12, 2023, in the 1500 block of Kenilworth Avenue, Northeast. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Sixth District arrived at the scene around 10:44 p.m., they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services found that Hayward showed no signs of life and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led detectives to identify 30-year-old Christopher Patrick Haynes as the primary suspect. According to the investigation, the incident began with a verbal and physical altercation between Haynes and the victims. Haynes reportedly drove away from the scene only to return minutes later, leading to another confrontation. During this second altercation, Haynes is alleged to have retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and threatened the victims. After leaving a second time, he allegedly parked his white Dodge Durango at a nearby church, walked back to the location of the dispute, and opened fire on Hayward and the other man.
Haynes was apprehended the following month, on September 6th, and charged with first-degree murder. However, his time in custody was short-lived. While at George Washington University Hospital, Haynes managed to escape from police custody, prompting a manhunt. He was eventually recaptured and taken back into custody to face the charges for his alleged role in the death of Brent Hayward.
