In the late summer afternoon of September 9, 2023, the life of 21-year-old Jordan Bianca Coates was tragically cut short in her hometown of Washington, D.C. A Black female, Jordan was found in front of an apartment building in the 1200 block of Duncan Place, Northeast, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident, which unfolded at approximately 3:13 p.m., prompted a swift response from the Metropolitan Police Department.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Jordan wounded but
still alive. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported her to a local hospital. Despite the immediate medical attention and life-saving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The investigation into her death quickly pointed to a domestic dispute, leading authorities to a suspect who was believed to be inside a nearby apartment.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Damion Brown of Southeast, D.C., engaged in a brief standoff with police, barricading himself inside the apartment. However, he soon surrendered to the authorities and was taken into custody on the same day as the shooting. Brown was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Jordan's death.
Court proceedings later revealed more about the circumstances leading up to the fatal encounter. It was established that Brown and Coates had been in a romantic relationship at some point. During a hearing in November 2023, a judge found that there was probable cause to move forward with the case against Brown. The court heard testimony regarding security footage, though it reportedly did not capture the shooting itself. The defense raised questions about the victim's behavior prior to the incident, but the judge ultimately determined there was sufficient evidence for the case to proceed. At the time of the offense, Brown was allegedly on a GPS monitor for a prior matter.
