In the autumn of 2023, the life of 25-year-old Kwame Keith tragically ended. On the evening of Monday, October 30, 2023, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 1800 block of Fairlawn Avenue in Southeast Washington, D.C., following a report of human remains being found. Upon their arrival around 7:37 p.m., they made a grim discovery: the body of an adult male located inside a trash can.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later identified the victim as
Kwame Keith, a man with no fixed address. An autopsy revealed the cause of his death to be multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. The shocking discovery sent ripples through the community, prompting a thorough investigation by the Homicide Branch of the MPD.
More than six months after the discovery of Kwame Keith's body, a significant breakthrough was made in the case. On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 34-year-old Emmanuel Lewis of Southeast, D.C., in connection with the murder. Lewis was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed. Court documents later revealed that a witness had come forward, stating that Lewis had confessed to the murder.
During legal proceedings, it was alleged that the shooting occurred on October 24, 2023. Surveillance footage from that day showed Lewis and other individuals interacting frequently near the location where the murder is believed to have taken place. While there was no video evidence of Keith at the scene, cell phone data reportedly placed him in the vicinity. Despite arguments from Lewis's defense attorney questioning the credibility of the witness due to their drug use, a judge found probable cause to proceed with the case, and Lewis was ordered to be detained. Another individual, 43-year-old George Pendleton, was later charged as an accessory after the fact.
