In the early morning hours of June 16, 2019, the sound of gunfire echoed through the 4300 block of 4th Street, Southeast in Washington, D.C. When police arrived at approximately 1:15 a.m., they discovered a grim scene. Thirty-year-old Arkeem Jackson, a Black male, was found unconscious, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Beside him, an adult female was also found with life-threatening gunshot wounds, though she was conscious and breathing.
Emergency services rushed both to a local hospital, but for Arkeem Jackson, it was too late. Despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting would span over a year and a half before a significant break in the case occurred. On December 31, 2020, detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch announced an arrest. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Davonte Brothers, also from Southeast, D.C. At the time the warrant was served, Brothers was already incarcerated at the D.C. Jail in connection with a separate First Degree Murder while Armed charge.
Davonte Brothers was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed for the death of Arkeem Jackson. Further investigation revealed a history of violent offenses for Brothers, including prior arrests for Assault on a Police Officer and Assault With Intent to Kill. The case against him for the shooting that killed Jackson and injured a woman has been moving through the court system, with proceedings and trial dates being set. In addition to the murder charge, Brothers faces numerous other charges related to the incident.
