In the late afternoon of a December day in Washington, D.C., a violent encounter cut short the life of 38-year-old Michael Hansley. On Saturday, December 2, 2023, at approximately 4:06 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1700 block of Benning Road, Northeast. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man, later identified as Hansley, on the sidewalk, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
At the time of his death, Hansley was of no fixed address.
For nearly a year, the case remained under investigation. Then, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, apprehended a suspect. Thirty-nine-year-old Juan Adams, a resident of Northwest, D.C., was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder while armed for his alleged involvement in Hansley's death.
Subsequent court proceedings began to shed light on the circumstances that may have led to the fatal shooting. During a preliminary hearing in late 2024, a Metropolitan Police Department detective testified that Hansley and Adams appeared to know each other. According to witness testimony presented by the detective, the confrontation stemmed from a narcotics deal. Witnesses stated that after a conflict over the transaction, Hansley confronted Adams, and the situation escalated to violence. Surveillance footage, though described as being of poor quality and filmed from a distance, reportedly showed three individuals approaching Hansley before one, believed to be Adams, extended a hand towards him, at which point Hansley fell from his scooter.
