In the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 29, 2014, authorities were called to a vehicle in the San Fernando Valley community of North Hollywood. Inside the automobile, responders discovered the body of William Thomas Creffield II. The 47-year-old Caucasian man had already been deceased for some time. At 1:15 a.m., he was officially pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Division took charge of the scene, working in conjunction with investigators from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Because Creffield was found inside a stationary vehicle in a decomposed state, initial examinations could not immediately pinpoint the precise mechanism of his death. Following an autopsy under coroner case number 2014-02999, the medical examiner classified his manner of death as a homicide, formally citing the cause as homicidal violence of undetermined etiology.

North Hollywood is an expansive, densely populated section of Los Angeles characterized by bustling commercial thoroughfares, residential neighborhoods, and industrial corridors. In an urban environment where thousands of vehicles line neighborhood streets, alleys, and commercial parking areas day and night, an unattended vehicle can easily escape close scrutiny. For detectives, the degree of decomposition indicated that Creffield had lost his life prior to the morning he was found, creating a challenging timeline for investigators attempting to retrace his final movements and discover who was with him.

Throughout 2014, the City of Los Angeles recorded nearly 260 homicides, with LAPD detectives across the San Fernando Valley handling dozens of complex violent crime investigations. Cases involving homicidal violence of undetermined etiology are among the most difficult for homicide detectives to pursue. Without the immediate ballistic signatures of a shooting or the distinct physical trauma of a stabbing, investigators must rely heavily on forensic testing, toxicology reports, digital footprints, and interviews with individuals who knew the victim or saw the vehicle in the days leading up to the discovery.

More than a decade after his death, the circumstances surrounding how William Thomas Creffield II died inside the vehicle remain unresolved. No suspects have ever been publicly identified, no motive has been revealed, and no arrests have been made in the case. Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department continue to ask anyone who might have information regarding Creffield's whereabouts in late April 2014, or who observed any suspicious activity involving a parked vehicle in North Hollywood at the time, to contact Valley Bureau Homicide detectives or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
