In the winter of 2024, a young man’s life of service was tragically cut short on a street in Washington, D.C. Ryan Realbuto, a 23-year-old male, had moved to the city from upstate New York to dedicate a year to helping others through the Capuchin Franciscan Volunteer Corps. He was working at Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, mentoring and teaching students from underprivileged backgrounds, a role he embraced with a gentle and kindhearted spirit.
Friends and family remember him as a person of deep faith, passionate about giving back to the community.
On the evening of Thursday, January 18, 2024, Ryan attended a social event at a church in the Shaw neighborhood. Afterward, he and two friends took the Metro and were walking back to their shared home. At approximately 10:04 p.m., as they walked along the 5000 block of South Dakota Avenue, Northeast, two men in a dark-colored vehicle approached them. One of the men got out and demanded money. When Ryan replied that he didn't have any, the assailant then demanded his cell phone. Before Ryan could comply with the request, the man shot him.
His friends immediately tried to render aid, and paramedics rushed him to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, Ryan Realbuto succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of January 19, 2024. The assailants fled the scene without taking anything, leaving a community to mourn a senseless act of violence that took a life full of promise.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is investigating the killing as a homicide stemming from an apparent attempted robbery. As of now, no arrests have been made in the case, and police have not publicly identified any suspects. Detectives continue to seek information from the public, offering a substantial reward for any tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible for Ryan's death. His family and community are left searching for answers, remembering a young man who was dedicated to making the world a better place.
