In the summer of 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm in the 300 block of K Street, Southeast in Washington, D.C., leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. On June 22nd, at approximately 3:18 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered 22-year-old George Hendrix, a Black male, unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the brazen daytime homicide led detectives to identify 18-year-old Duron Hudson of Hyattsville, Maryland, as a suspect. Less than two months after the shooting, on August 14, 2019, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Hudson, charging him with First Degree Murder While Armed. The arrest came after an earlier attempt to apprehend him on August 9th, during which he had managed to evade capture.
Despite the initial arrest, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. In September 2019, a D.C. Superior Court judge ruled that there was not enough evidence to establish probable cause that Hudson was involved in the murder, and the case against him was dismissed. Authorities had also released surveillance footage of a second person of interest they were seeking in connection with the fatal shooting, though it is unclear if this individual was ever identified or apprehended. The Metropolitan Police Department had offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
